Spinal cord damage at the time of injury. It happens when the spinal cord is bruised, compressed, pulled or torn, which directly injures the nerve cells and spinal cord tissues. It is one of the two main phases of damage after SCI, with the other being ‘secondary injury’ (continued damage to the spinal cord in the seconds to weeks after the injury first happens).
