Secondary injury

Continued damage to the spinal cord in the seconds to weeks after the injury first happens. Secondary injury is caused by bodily processes such as inflammation, lack of blood flow and build-up of damaging chemicals. It is one of the two main phases of damage after SCI, with the other being ‘primary injury’ (the initial damage at the time of injury).
